Why Oral Hygiene Is So Important?

Dental imageNew research suggests that the health of your mouth mirrors the condition of your body as a whole. For example, when your mouth is healthy, chances are your overall health is good, too. On the other hand, if you have poor oral health, you may have other health problems. Regular visits to your dentist do more than keep your smile attractive, they can also tell your dentists a lot about your overall health, including whether or not you may be developing a serious disease like diabetes.  Conversely, research also shows that good oral health may actually prevent certain diseases from occurring.  Dental implants can help with some oral health problems, but here is some additional information about why oral hygiene is so important.

Gum Disease And Other Health Problems

According to recent reports, there is a strong relationship between gum disease and health complications like stroke and heart disease. Women with gum disease also show higher incidences of premature labor, low birth-weight babies and osteoporosis.

Other research shows that more than 90 percent of all systemic diseases (diseases involving many organs or the whole body) have oral manifestations, including swollen gums, mouth ulcers, dry mouth and excessive gum problems. Such diseases include:

  • Diabetes
  • Leukemia
  • Oral cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney disease

Bad Oral Hygiene And Additional Problems

Many patients think that their oral hygiene only affects the health of their teeth.  Unfortunately, this is not the case.  If you don’t take care of your teeth and gums, your poor oral hygiene can actually lead to other health problems like facial pain, gingivitis and advanced gum disease. Patients can also experience digestion problems, issues with the heart and other major organs.

How To Achieve Good Oral Health

Seeing a dentist regularly helps you keep your mouth healthy and allows your dentist to watch for developments that may point to other health issues.  A dental exam can also detect poor nutrition and hygiene, growth and development problems and improper jaw alignment. To help your dentist help you, it is important to provide him with a complete medical history and inform him or her of any recent health developments, even if they seem unrelated to your oral health.

Good Oral Hygiene Begins At Home

Here are some steps you can practice at home to ensure your teeth stay healthy and beautiful:

1) Brush at least twice a day with a good quality fluoridated toothpaste.

2) Floss daily to remove plaque from places your toothbrush can’t reach.

3) Consume foods that provide necessary nutrients (vitamins A and C, in particular) to prevent gum disease.

4) Avoid cigarettes and smokeless tobacco, which may contribute to gum disease and oral cancer.

5) Avoid highly acidic and sugar-filled foods and beverages.
